View Full Version : What features do you want to see in the D2 firmware?

Check out all the great suggestions found in this thread:
http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12945

I hope that Cowon will comply with the wishes from their most enthusiastic users.

I'd like to see the following features:
A File Manager utility would also be nice where you can copy, move and delete files and folders in both internal and external (SD card) memory.

The possibility to enable the TV-out feature globally for every menu, which would be especially nice for displaying pictures on the TV and also for hooking up the D2 to your stereo system using the A/V cable.

To be able to play video files without requiring to convert them to 320x240 resolution first, as well as support for higher resolution TV-out if possible.

But first of all, fix the bugs before adding more features. Keep up the good work! :)

Definitely good suggestions on the link you provided. Didn't want to register there as well, so I'll only add that I think the firmware should remember your personal settings between upgrades.

I would love to see Musepack support. It's already in the A2, hopefully they can bring it to the D2 soon!

This is pretty simple... while we can all come up with a list of codecs that can be supported I have one main thing to crybaby about that almost every other player can support...

...MULTIPLE PLAYLIST SUPPORT!!!!

I mean seriously guys, there is NO excuse for not implementing this. Dealing with the A2 and now the D2 this is the ONE negative about these players. And it is a BIG negative, I mean there are a TON of less capable players that gets this right the first time.

Really, when you open stuff up in notepad.. a playlist in any given form is just a mere text file plain & simple. What is so friggin hard in having these capable players read.... a text file... and playing according to what's listed in this text file? You mean it's possible to implement & improve audio/video codec support, have the D2 support FlashLite games, and ensure that the D2 can support SDHC cards... YET we can't get the luxury of ANY multiple playlist support? PLS?! Or ANYTHING that you guys can throw together?!?!

Seriously, it's fortunate that these players seems to get everything else right otherwise I seriously look elsewhere, tho a couple of friends I know of who was seriously interested in the D2 was immediately turned off after finding out there's no PLS support. Sure one can make folders & put their favorite songs there but really... isn't this a waste of space when they have those same songs in existing folders/albums on the player? Obviously the player's capabilities is up to a trivial task of playing from a PLS file so WHY are we not given this on the D2 & A2?!?! I mean for crying out loud... IT WAS ON THE IAUDIO M3!!!!! So wait, was this support all of a sudden dropped with someone up top saying "you know what... eh it wouldn't hurt to implement it JUST IN CASE someone needs the support but you know... maybe just having stuff play from ONE DYNAMIC PLAYLIST is more flexible".

Eh, sorry if I went off in rant mode but the combination of this being an otherwise great capable player AND the fact that developers are continually updating this player... it seems that they're ignoring the complaints of playlist support for whatever reason I don't feel like speculating in (ah what the hell, because we don't need it? because we don't deserve that much luxury? because we should worship one god and that one god is the almighty default dynamic playlist which we should all put on random shuffle mode? No other playlist shall come before this gawd?)

*sigh* I'm done here -_-

I would like to have

1) a build in English Dictionary (oxford or Longman)
with a small keyboard, that will be wonderful, even to pay extra money,
for example 20.00USD.
you can make it registered to single serial Number so that no free copy.
2) Notepad better have a keyboard input.

3) fixing bug of 2.50Beta is for sure, don't have to say.

As well as MusePack support, I'd also like to see gapless playback! (This occurred to me while I was listening to an album and heard a nasty gap in between two tracks which are supposed to flow.) MP3 now supports gapless playback (and I'm pretty sure OGG always has natively), so the D2 should as well!

some support for aac (maybe even protected) would be awesome for us ex ipod users, its such a great device, its too bad a lot of people are going to have a problem when they realize they have 500, 1000 or even more songs that are useless now that they have a d2, also just support in general for different music services (napster and others)

I've been very pleased with each firmware update so far! To be honest, it started me thinking of more possibilities. Here are a couple:

Updates for swf playback:
An XML document of existing media files for the flash player to load.
The onMouseMove event to trigger when sliding a finger across the screen.
Transparent window (wmode) background.
Set SWF as wallpaper.
Imployment of Flash Player 9 to take advantage of ActionScript 3 Sound object improvements (SoundMixer.computeSpectrum would allow for swf-based audio animations/visualizations).
ExternalInterface (req. Flash Player 8) functions for calling D2 methods (display HUD, get/set volume, etc).
The ability to print pictures or text documents when attached to a USB printer.
A calculator (The more advanced, the better).
The ability to save, load, and delete playlists in the XSPF format from the Dynamic Playlist screen.
Adjust the seek bar to have a slightly larger hit area (and perhaps allow scrubbing).
Improved percision when scrolling with pointer strokes. Ideally, a list would scroll while screen is pressed and stop when released. Thanks for listening!

I'll just echo what others have said. Media player basics ..

1) Gapless playback. This is NOT rocket science.
2) Multiple playlists (in UMS mode). Don't care what sort, as long as you can create and edit on both PC and the player.
3) Fix those hardwired limits on number of files/folders/playlist length etc.

Save the flash (in both senses) stuff for the Q5 or the A3, get the basics right (same goes double for the I7).

1) Ability to browse albums while seeing the album art
2) Configurable timeouts (where it returns you to the beginning) when browsing the library
3) Get album art from the folder, not just ID3 tag

Speaking to #1, I'd really like to see the browser/library more integrated. Like when I'm in the playback screen, maybe I could just straight away skip to the next song, next album, or next artist without all the convoluted tapping to get to the library browser part. Fast forward/rewind within a song would be nice too.

Not firmware related, but how about a manual? I don't know what half the stuff does. How do I make a playlist?

I have another feature request: how about the ability to add all the files from an Album listing to the DPL? i.e. - going into the Music Library, selecting Artist, choosing an artist from the list, selecting one of that artists's albums, pressing 'Settings' then 'Add To DPL'. That feature might actually make the DPL useful. Currently, the only way to add an entire album (with one press of Add To DPL) is to go into File view and add a directory - provided, of course, you've taken the time to arrange all of your music into albums by folder.

Definitely better touchscreen stroking.

the scroll needs to stop when the pointer was taken off from the screen, not continuing going down,,, (this is annoying.)

Also the "time out" issue.. it needs to be available as an option in the settings so we can change amount of time required for it to go back to the main menu.

also, I want MTP mode back on the next firmware.

and definitely artist alignment issue... the artists that has "The" in front needs to be aligned just like Ipod!

I don't want to scroll down all the way to "T" category to find The Beatles!!!

I really wonder if Cowon takes a look at these problems.

Add option for the D2 to have it the Music Library default to Music Folder view (Folder/File View).

In other words rather than go through the music list > music library > folder view > music, make it just take me to the folder view > music folder directly.

"My only gripe so far about the D2 is the inability to set Folder/File browsing as the default rather than the ID3 based Music Library."

Things I'd like to see in the next firmware release are:

1) Addition of a software EQ with 2 bands to augment the built-in EQ on the Thompson chipset; one band for high frequencies, and one for low frequencies. These extra bands would be configurable at 31.5/45/63 Hz for the low end, and 12.5/14/16KHz for the high end. These bands could be toggled on/off in the EQ menu for those who don't want to have a software-based EQ.

2) Setting to modify the order of information where the Album/Artist/Title is displayed. This order never made sense to me as I'd like to see the song title first.

3) Support for .PLA and .M3U playlists.

4) Routing the FM radio signal through the same MP3/movie audio system, so things like EQ and BBE could be applied.

5) SPDIF output toggle.

6) Support for the inline remote control used on the upcoming Q5.

I started a thread in the other forum - guess I should have posted it here. :)

Word wrapping, please!

I would really love to have word-wrapping in the text viewer. Right now it just breaks wherever it happens to be at the end of the line. This and a slightly larger but not ugly font (like the oh-so-hard-on-the-eyes 1.5x and 2x) would have me switch to it instead of using my PDA to read books.

Thanks! Loving the D2 - it's seriously everything I was hoping for as far as music and video go, and thanks to whoever made the decision to go with mini-usb instead of yet another freaking proprietary cable.

I would LOVE to have a toggle for SPDIF or USB output! Connecting this to a Headroom Micro Amp with DAC via a digital out would be killer! This would capture the high end market completely as FLAC with digital outs is pretty much the holy grail of digital audio quality.

I would consider support for the newest version of FLAC to be an absolute essential feature. The SOLE reason that I chose the D2 was FLAC support and SDHC support. If the newest version of FLAC is not going to receive support on the D2, I will be one very unhappy camper...

A little song search thing, like in the phone book on a mobile phone? Just have a little mini keyboard pop up, or select the letters with up/down keys like on old arcade games. It would really speed up looking for a specific song if you have thousands of mp3s.

I would like to see the "user defined button" be able to be define more settings - specificaly take me right to "Music Library"

The biggest issue I have is having to ..
1.click the screen, 2.then browser, 3.then music list, 4.then mode, 5.then music library, 6.albums or artists, 7.select album or artist, 8.which album 9.select song

This is 9 clicks every time just to play a song! (unless I'm doing something wrong)

Other than this I love the D2

Apologies if these have been suggested, I'm new here andI tried a search but failed miserably.
4 suggestions so far:
Ability to encode recordings at chosen mp3 rate rather than wmv.
Ability to display a range of RAW photo files from the most common camera manufacturers, and other graphics formats.
Ability to play/show/output video at sizes other than 320x240, and to scale it as necessary.
Ability to copy from memory to SD card and vice versa, with a checksum verification after copy, to confirm all is ok.

This is the main I want to see:
Support of TTA files (this is the fastest lossless format I know).
Support of WavPack files (it supports in the best way with Rock Box firmware).

You didn't write in filename options that D2 supports OGG/FLAC tags (Vorbis Comments). But it does!

The Left and Right Graphic EQ Visualization Peak Level Meters are displayed BACKWARDS while playing music. The RIGHT Channel Meter is displayed on the Left side of the screen and the LEFT Channel Meter is displayed on the Right. This needs to be corrected.

This does not impede the function of the player, but has been an annoyance for me ever since I've used it after recently ordering online. I have yet to see this problem mentioned online anywhere concerning the D2 so I'm posting about it here. I'm currently using Firmware 2.50 and will not upgrade until reports of newer versions are more stable than they currently are. At last look, this problem wasn't mentioned as a correction for any firmware upgrade.

Final Thought: For those that feel that this is not that much of a problem and shouldn't be bothered with, What's the point of having a Visual Peak EQ Level Meter if you still have to "do the math" yourself as to what its really telling you? This is akin to having the music track names displayed backwards. ?ot evah t'ndid uoy fi ot tnaw dluow ohw tub ,yaw taht meht daer llits NAC uoY.

This should be a simple software correction. Hopefully knowledge of this simple issue will become a little more widespread as I haven't run across it anywhere else yet or throughout firmware version advances it hasn't been noticed or taken care of.

Most importantly, increase the file limit. I need 5000 for a 16GB card, and 10000 in order to make use of a 32GB card.

Change the shuffle feature so that it removes played files from the playlist until you either reset the shuffle (ideal), or at least until you change out of shuffle mode and go back in. It's annoying to have 4000 songs on the player and still hear the same some twice in 30 minute span on shuffle mode.

If there's any way to improve the scan time for external cards, that would be great. With the 16GB card it approaches 1 minute.

Make it so that if the card contents have not changed, it doesn't do the full scan. As it is, it seems if you've had the player connected to a computer at all it does the full scan.

Multiple playlists. I have read the tip on how to trick it into having multiple playlists using windows media player. However, it seems rather a lot of extra work. I also HATE windows media player and don't even have it installed. I'd rather not install it just for that one task.

I'm new here and I would like to add my 2 cents.

1. A higher (if not remove) file limit. I am using my D2 for music only and the cap at 4000 files is too low for a 16gb player that supports a 32gb card.

My 2 cents,

Extended record times. I like to time shift my satellite radio listening. I record in the morning and then listen to it in the afternoon.
This would be a great niche for this player. With the battery life and the external memory card support, there should be no problem with increasing the recording time up to 6 hours.

I would like to see better treatment of podcasts.

Podcasts (files with the appropriate ID3 genre field indicating a podcast):
1) Should be in a separate top-level category which lets you play all podcasts and only podcasts without trying to sort by any fields except song name (using podcast from genres and playing all will still try to sort by album).
2) Should *only* appear in the podcast top-level category and perhaps in genre/podcasts, but should *not* appear in the normal artist or album listing, since while podcasts do have artist and album fields, it doesn't usually make sense to mix them up with music.
3) Should allow you to resume a podcast and a song separately

My old Sansa View was able to do this.

Also, I'm finding it extremely annoying that I can't recharge and play at the same time. It requires a special Cowon adapter to do that and there aren't any car adapters. So I ask that you have it recognize the difference between a computer and a USB connection that only charges, and allow the user to recharge and play at the same time if it's not a computer.

I've been very pleased with each firmware update so far! Here are a couple:Updates for swf playback:
An XML document of existing media files for the flash player to load.
The onMouseMove event to trigger when sliding a finger across the screen.
Transparent window (wmode) background.
Set SWF as wallpaper._______________________________________

Hi everyone,

I hope someone from COWON is actually reading these posts. So, here goes...

I've got my D2+ 16GB + 32GB SDHC memory card couple of weeks ago and so far I really like it.

However, file limit of 500 folders and 4000 files is way too small. With 32GB SDHC memory cards widely available next firmware needs higher file limit 200%. How about 6000 for main memory and 6000 for SDHC card to start with, or even higher for SDHC card since 32GB is twice the amount of memory comparing with 16GB D2+. Being a programmer I am pretty sure D2+ firmware is capable to check amount of memory on SDHC card and maybe even adjust file limit dynamically. Hardcoded higher file limit is OK too (less code).

Guys at Cowon are doing an awesome job with sound quality on their flash-based players + it is expandable (32GB SDHC memory cards totally make sense) that's why I've bought D2+.

Please make higher file/folder number available with next firmware for D2+. FAT32 allows to raise it at least twice the amount without problems (current file/folder number limit is not a FAT32 limit but HARDCODED firmware limit). Is there any information on when new firmware for D2+ is going to come out?

Thank you very much in advance.

I echo others who say FIRST FIX THE BUGS. Many of us have been waiting two years for the D2 firmware to STOP CORRUPTING THE DATABASE. At least, when it does happen, GIVE US FACILITIES FOR A FULL REBUILD. The files are still on the D2 - uncorrupted - SO JUST CATALOG THEM AGAIN. I don't care if that takes ten minutes! It takes me hours to recover otherwise.

I'm afraid to even change SD cards because that too can lock up the unit. I don't know how many times I've had to completely clear and then slowly reload all my music files. Don't bother with suggestions on this - I have tried EVERY FIX out there, multiple times. None solve the problem.
And I don't know why Cowon refuses to address the issue. There are hundreds of user posts on this. It IS COSTING COWON MONEY because users like myself actively warn people away.

The D2 is a beautiful player. The firmware features are pretty much enough for me, but the RELIABILITY of the firmware queers the whole thing.

As for features, one small thing should be changed: don't auto-exit from the Music List if I stop to think for a few seconds. This is maddening, especially when dealing with many folders, files, and small print. If I'm in Music List it's because I want to be there!
