Hi

I tried to record a track from a Sony MiniDisc player onto my M5L player using the line-out port on the MD player and the line-in port on the i-Audio Sub-Pack which is connected to the M5L (and also a good quality stereo optical cable).

I set the correct settings on the MD player for line-out output and an mp3 track is saved on the M5L with the correct track-length once I stop the recording. The problem is that when I play the recorded track on the M5L there is no sound. I transferred the track onto my laptop and opened it in an audio editing program and indeed no audio data is recorded on the mp3 file. Is there anyone here with the know-how?

Thank you

The M5L does not record via optical cable, only copper cable. Could that be the problem?

Thanks for the reply. The main unit does not have a line-in port, but you can purchase either a cradle or a small 'sub-pack' unit, both of which connect at the base of the player and have line-in ports to transfer music via an optical cable.

It would be great to hear from anyone who has successfully recorded a track using the line-in function, maybe there's something I'm not doing right...

afaik even the subpack line-in port is for an analogue (copper cable) signal. Actually I don't think it even supports optical (SPDIF) line out, never mind line in. Do you really mean 'optical'??

Yea, what he said.

Thanks to you both! You've probably just found the problem, I always assumed that line-in/out ports were for digital transfer only. I'm going to buy an analogue cable to see if it works - have either of you made a successful analogue recording with the M5 before? Any tips or tricks? Any recommended brands of analogue cables? Thank you so much for your help.

Just follow the directions in the M5 user guide; it is no different than my X5L.

I really appreciate the help, there aren't too many forums that would serve so well.
