View Full Version : Does anyone know WHY?

My D2 says it's full but adding up all the folders = barely 2GB? It's a 4 giger. In other words, using properties for all folders size says barely 2GB but D2 Information menu says it's pretty close to full.

If you'd be so kind, would someone w/ a 4GB D2 and minimal pics and videos loaded tell me how many Gigs they can load of music? I'm beginning to think there's some hidden or corrupt files in system folder maybe.

Last thing, is formatting the D2 a normal occurrence like it is w/ Sandisks? Those cheapies had to get formatted all the time due to weird corrupt sys files.

Thx!

try scandisk (chkdsk)

if this doesn't fix it, format and reinstall the firmware (follow the manual).

then scandisk again and check the statistics.
if still there's any problem, i guess the flash memory it faulty.
RMA.

That sounds good. Thanks. Did you happen to check if adding up all the D2 folders sizes, using Properties, equaled what the D2 Information screen says? That would help me confirm that I have a problem.

Yep, must have had corruption. UPdated FW from 2.50 to 2.51 and now, probably due to disk being cleaned during process, I can load it up to expected size. Too bad, for awhile there I thought nothing could go wrong in a D2 . . . oh well. At least it's not like a Sandisk that needed formating on a constant basis.

By the way does anyone else format their D2 as a preventive measure? If so at what stage do u do it at? Before upgrading FW I'd imagine, versus during the FW upgrade process. Anyway . . all's well - I think.

the only time you should format is when you suspect that there is a corruption and scandisk can't fix it.

99% time, the cause of corruption is improper removal of the device (from usb port).

Though I'd agree to improperly removing D2/USB causing corruption, as of late when I've loaded FLAC, MP3 and Oggs together that's when I seem to have problems.

I've read info regarding FLAC’s formatting and immediately realized I'd have to school myself further to understand it all properly BUT I'm here to listen to music and have decided I really don't want to invest the time in learning the intricacies involved in other than MP3 formats. I enjoy listening to my music collection and have enough work to do otherwise.

I fixed the problem simply by installing 2.51 FQ and that's all the time I have for now. I put BB King Live at Monteux FLAC in as one folder to test and it sounds so so sweet. The D2 sound is truly amazing and really helps me out during the day. I have extreme back pain due to a drunk drive many years ago and I hardly think about the pain with the D2 performing so well!

Anyway, there is probably something wrong with the format of my FLACS and Oggs and I believe that caused the corruption as well.

I do not own a flash-based player, but, on a hunch, do you see a Recycle Bin folder in the D2 when looking at it from Windows Explorer? If so, empty the bin and recheck the D2. At least on my X5L, if there are files in the recycle bin, the player shows less memory than physically exists.
