I'm new to the whole mp3 thing, but needed a new toy and, after years of faithful service from my mindisc, decided to treat myself.
Not being one to dive headfirst into things, I did some serious research on these things. And being a professional audio engineer, I like to think that my opinion might be worth something.
I eventually decided on the iaudio M3, and I definately made the right choice. If you're an adult, then don't listen to the criticism. This is easy to use, sounds fantastic, and is small enough to throw in your back pocket and forget about. I've had no problems with the remote, because that was a fault with the early batch. I know this because I asked Cowon, who replied immediately! Try getting that out of Apple and iRiver. They are also constantly issuing firmware updates, and ones that make a difference. They are currently working on adding gapless playback, but as it is, if you encode your music in .ogg format, and you're walking about town, you won't even notice the gap.
The radio works very well, although you should now there is some noise when you record from it, but it is not terrible.
The headphones are a bit pants, but they always are. I stongly recommend the Sennheiser PX200s, which sound wonderful with this player. The only real alternative to this player is the iriver HP series. But I found them too bulky, a little plasticky (it's a word now!), and the iRiver customer support is non-existant.
Buy this and be happy.
 He says it guys!
