Greetings.

I have an on-going project to squeeze every bit of functionality
out of my Toshiba 4005cds PII 233mhz from 1998
- now with XP, 160mb RAM & a WD2500BEVE (laptop "T").
I can now use VLC & S/MPlayer to play avi files where the bitrate is not too high,
the dims are 320x240 and the frame rate is 25fps or less.
JA will not play such avi files on "T" without -
at some unknown time for some unknown reason -
CPU usage going to 100% and playback failing.

I can also use CoolPlayer, WinAmp & foobar to play mp3 files
while using the awesome SpectrumLab (SL) as a spectrum analyzer.
I can use JA to play mp3 files with SL
IF I disable the spectrum analyzer and disable the JA MPEG audio decoder.

Anyway, sometimes I want to play mp3 files without using SL on "T" and
prefer JA (with OLD skin 122C - which has a nice embedded spectrum analyzer)
without disabling the spectrum analyzer or JA MPEG audio decoder.
JA will play mp3 files encoded at 128-44 at around 50% CPU usage,
but plays mp3 files encoded at 96-32 or 48-24 at around 99% CPU usage.
I do not understand why JA plays the 128-44 mp3 files at less CPU usage
than the 96-32 or 48-24 mp3 files.

Any helpful replies/insights appreciated.
Thank you.

It seems I may have found the/a resolution to the 100% CPU usage problem with mp3s at less than 128&44.1 - the JA CPU usage with mp3s at less than 128&44.1 is still slightly higher than than mp3s at 128&44.1 - but it is no longer 100% - which is great. Yesterday I also found settings for JA so it will play .avi video files on my PII - which means I can (also) use JA to play real mulitmedia (MM) playlists - with both audio(mp3) files and video(avi) files ... This PII from 1998 is becoming a real MM monster! I can't believe it ... it's great

No, the issue remains unresolved. I want to find a solution.
JA plays audio with DirectShow and video with DirectX.
JA plays videos at a lower CPU usage than JA plays mp3s that are not at 128x44.
This seems like a DirectX resampling problem?
Whatever this problem is, it is more pronounced on my PII.
Every mp3 player plays mp3s with lower bitrates & sampling rates
at lower CPU usage than mp3s with higher rates - except JetAudio.
It does not make sense that JA plays an avi file with audio at 32x24 at about 50% CPU usage
but plays back an mp3 at 32x24 at 99% CPU usage ...
