I have been using Jet Audio for a few years without a problem. Today I purchased JA Plus 5.17 and installed it.

Since Jet Audio 5.xx came out, I have been getting an error when I try to rip CD's "Can't open ripper!"

I assumed this was due to the rip feature being locked in the basic version. However, now I find out that I get the same error msg with the Plus version. WTF?

I have uninstalled it, purged my PC off all related files and all related registry entries I could find, then reinstalled. Had absolutely no effect whatsoever. I get the same message with newer CD's, really old CD's, and CD's that I have burned, so I know it's not copy protection.

FYI I have a TEAC CD-Rom and a Plexwriter 12/10/32A CD-RW, and it makes no difference which drive I have the source disc in.

Anybody have any clue what the problem might be? :mad:

I assume the same. You said that you cleaned your PC. You did it manually or with a special program? Maybe there are a lot of entries in the registry with an absolute different or unidentifiable name. My advice is to try a special registry cleaning tool like RegCleaner (http://www.sofotex.com/RegCleaner-download_L4965.html) (unfortunately it is shareware now).

Try to change the ripping method.
You can do that from
Ripping window -> Config button.
You can choose one of "Generic SCSI" or "Native NT" options.

FYI in case anyone else has this problem in the future. The problem turned out to by my ASPI layer. Turns out, version 4.7xx does not work well with Windows 98.

I was able to fix the problem by rolling back to ASPI 4.6. Now everything works like a charm.

Have to say that I am sorely disappointed with the JetAudio tech support. I exchanged several emails with them, the last of which they recommended that I update my ASPI to 4.71 (from 4.70). When I replied to them that it didn't fix the problem, they didn't respond again (going on three weeks now). It would be one thing if I had the free version, but I shelled out the $$ for the Plus version.

Meh, whaddya want for $29?

The funny part about all of this is that Plextor had me update to 4.70 last year while troubleshooting a problem with my CD burner, and it didn't fix that problem either. LMAO!
