This may be of interest to individuals who want to transfer LP to hard drive the easy way. I considered doing this previously, however all I've read on the net about doing this indicates that you must connect thru your stereo system or buy a stand alone pre-amp. I found this to not be true provided you have a decent turntable. I have an older Optimus Lab 1100 from Radio Shack and discovered I could use this when I went to RS to check on pre-amps. Very surprised that the young man working there as me what turnbable I had. Since it was one of their brands, he told me what to do. There is a switch under the rubber mat for line-out which shows when the oblong hole is moved to the 12 O:Clock position. I set it, picked up the an adapter for the 2 RCA jacks on the line from my turntable, plugged into line-in on CPU and to my surprise it worked. The sound quality was very good depending on the condition of the old LPs. I just fire up Recording in JetAudio, set my choice of output file extension, settings, etc and start. No problem getting a seperate track for each song. Just sit and watch song playing and when it reaches the gap between songs, stop, then start again. I tried a couple of utilities that is supposed to do this automatically, however one must have a degree from MIT to figure it out:) I do need a "Free" utility that will reduce those noises on some old LPs like pops, etc. Again, I tried a few and they too were just too complicated to setup. Would appreciate any help on this one. Anyway, I know most of you young guys out there will laugh, but hey, I have over 700 old LPs dating from day one of the long playing record and just about every song that was tops during the 40s-60s:) The Platters, Ray Conniff, etc still rock:) Have a good one.

Hi,...set my choice of output file extension...I hope you did the right choice.
For ripping your LPs to the computer the best way is a WAV format, bacause you are able to remove clicks, pops and crackle. The final format for archiving your LPs depends on a couple of things.
Generally I advice the lossless format WAV or one of the lossless, compressing formates like Monkeys Audio (*.ape) (http://www.monkeysaudio.com/index.html), Free Lossless Audio Coder (*.flac) (http://flac.sourceforge.net/).

On the other hand, if you like it to listen to your ripped LPs on a portable player, then the MP3 (http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/) format would be the first choice (at the moment) (http://www.jetaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2202). If not, then you have a lot of practical possibilities. After the optimisation of your WAV-LPs, you could write the songs on a CD or DVD in WAV or in another compressing and lossless format as above-mentioned.
The big advantage if you have your songs in WAV is that you are more flexible to convert it later in e.g. Ogg Vorbis (http://www.vorbis.com/), AAC (http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/aac.html), Musepack (http://www.musepack-source.de/english/), MP3.I do need a "Free" utility that will reduce those noises on some old LPs like pops, etc. Here you are...
Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) FREE
WavePurity (http://www.wavepurity.com/usa/frame.htm) free demo

Furthermore, I found a quite good tutorial. This one includes also a paragraph about removing of background noice (clicks etc.)
Transferring LPs to CDR: Some Advice (http://www.delback.co.uk/lp-cdr.htm)I know most of you young guys out there will laugh, but hey, I have over 700 old LPs dating from day one of the long playing record and just about every song that was tops during the 40s-60s:) The Platters, Ray Conniff, etc still rock:) Have a good one.If there is anybody laughing...I will kick his.....
Old LPs are one of the best stuff what you can own. If you listen to such music you are able to hear that go around of the record and you can hear, or better feel the whole dynamic of the song...without any digitalisation. :music:

Finally some links to a suitable forum...with a lot of more information.
