I bought a M3 used and have enjoyed it for several months. But now it has gone crazy!
When I turn the volume up I have to hold the paddle wheel and then as soon as I let my finger off, it goes back down to zero. If I somehow get it to move into the menu, it just scrolls quickly and continueously. Its like the paddle wheel that controls the volume is stuck on, but it also happens when the remote is unplugged as well.
What should i do? Update the firmwhere? I have no clue why it would do this.
any help is appreciated.

Sound to me like you have a hardware problem. Click the Tech Support link on the cowonamerica.com site to send an email or converse with a support rep on Live Chat.

Try the firmware anyways. Either something is wrong with the hardware and causing it to misread/not read at all some stuff or your software has gone kooky. Firmware should fix software.

Upgrading the firmware didn't do anything. Tech support doesn't want to help me because I bought the unit used, even though it worked fine for months.
I hear a sound coming from near the volume knob on the actual unit when it gets booted up. Also, the blue light screen never goes off because the unit is always trying to scroll.
I think this is a mechanical problem. Should I open the thing up?
I have the EXACT same problem:
Volume goes down constantly, remote is non-responsive, i have to yank out the remote, or do a reset to turn off the player!
after fiddling w it, it now cannot restart at all, the HD spins up, then down, then up, then down, etc...
I was searchiong for new M3's, are they totally discontinued, or just me being unlucky?
I have had th eunit for 18 months now, ordered and received a second remote a few months back, firmware is 1.38

That is strange. I chatted with a support tech online today and he/she said that COWON does repair out of warranty iAudio/COWON products.

Breakfast chef is correct. Cowon America does do support and service for out of warranty products. Reccomend contacting them about the issue to see if you can submit an RMA request. Here's there contact page:
