I am having many of the same firmware update problems others have reported. Maybe my mistake was to update a working G3 to the latest firmware? It had a few quirks but it mostly ran fine.

I downloaded and installed firmware version 1.51. I followed the directions including holding down the play button and then plugging the G3 into the computer. It recognizes it as a Recovery Mode Device Player. It doesn't matter from this point on whether I continue to hold down the play button beyond this point. Once the firmware software starts, it recognizes the device but then changes it to a Cowon Mass Storage device. No longer appears to be in recovery mode. The firmware software then chugs for about 2 minutes and then reports the "Semaphore timeout" error.

Is there anything else I can try? I have tried with Win2K and Win98 and get the same results.

This is my wife's MP3 player she got for her birthday - :(   :(

Thanks for any help!
mike

Good news :)

I sent my G3 off to the Cowon America service center and they promptly repaired and had it back in the mail the next day. Ground service was a little slow but it was returned within about 10 days of sending it off. I have no idea if it is the same player (probably is) but the box and contents are exactly what I sent to them.

I'm still disappointed that the firmware update bombed but I'm glad its working again and I can't complain about the service.

This is a great little player, hopefully it will keep rocking for a few years!
