Converting MPEG-2 to AVI

I have a Cowon D2 and I use it mainly to watch TV shows. I use JA to convert MPEG-2 to AVI.

Most of the time when I convert, either the recording will "skip" several minutes, or it will just stop at a certain point and not record anything afterwards. Is this a known issue with Convert Video?

I changed the codec to ffdshow, but it doesn't seem to help.

What's the most reliable way you know? Is there a better free codec? Should I capture the shows in some format other than MPEG-2?

And while I'm asking, is there anything I can do to make the conversion faster?

Re: Converting MPEG-2 to AVI

i dunno about the vid conv issue, but the conversion speed mainly depends on the raw horsepower of your PC. get a high speed quad core to achieve max speeds.

Re: Converting MPEG-2 to AVI

It might have something to do with your video card, processor, and memory. if you have a video card that has less than 32mb of memory or old drivers then you might want to consider upgrading. if your processor is slower than about 500mhz then upgrading would be vital, also low amounts of system memory can cause problems too, keep windows task manager open to monitor memory and processor usage. If it you start running out of memory then try closing as many background applications you can (MSN IM, Skype, Folding@Home, Bittorrent, etc.)
