U2 -- no power after slow charge
My U2 has been working beautifully since I received it last month. Until this morning.
I noticed last night that the battery was low. So, I consulted the manual, set the U2 to 'slow charge' mode, connected it to my Toshiba laptop's USB port, and set my laptop to stay on without hibernating, so the U2 could charge throughout the night. This morning the display read "USB-Ready", and everything looked normal. So, I used the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature on Windows XP, as I always do, to unmount the USB device before removing the U2. However, since removing the U2 from the USB drive, the U2 has no power whatsoever. It does not turn on! It does not appear to be a battery issue because there is no power when I reconnected the U2 to my USB port either. In fact, I received an error message that the USB device has malfunctioned!! Pressing the reset button didn't help. I do not want to try anything else for fear of nullifying my warranty. Has this happened to anyone else? Can someone please help? I would really like to continue to use this product! Thanks. |

My battery stopped charging on my U2 after a couple weeks. At least in my case I could see it when connected to the USB port. I did a lot of reading on similar problems. It seems for some people reinstalling the firmware worked. If you are game you can try to put it in recovery mode and upgrade or reinstall the firmware. Since your U2 appears dead even through USB I don?t see it getting worse. The bad news is that since you can?t access the U2 through USB you don?t have a chance to backup your music first. If you do have access backup your music. Updating the firmware in recovery mode will wipe out your flash memory. In any case I recommend the following.
1. Download the latest U2 firmware. 2. Install it on your PC. 3. Press the play on the U2 and connect to the USB port (hold play until the PC tells you that it found a device in recovery mode) 4. Follow the windows wizard to install the device (allow it to search the internet for the driver) 5. Once the new device is installed the firmware update program should start (if it does not, just start it manually) 6. At the end the ?close? button will become selectable. If this works you should see the device as an USB drive. If the U2 is still dead I would just call tech support to get an RMA and return the device for repairs. They open at 9:30 (California) and I suggest you call them as soon as they open or you will never get a technician. A message will tell you to send them an email which they will never answer. I hope this helps. Good Luck!
