(long text to explain how it came to the problem, skip to the middle if not interested)
The player worked without problems at first but I couldn't find or mount the data partition in Linux (4 partitions of strange dimensions and types were found, maybe a non-standard partition table). Therefore I created and formatted a new partition after which transfering and playing files worked. I now wanted to update the firmware and transferred version 1.22 beta into the root folder. The player ignored the file (and still showed v1.20b in the menu). I wasn't sure whether there was a problem with the firmware file or that the reason were other files on the player so I deleted all files and tried version 1.21 beta. This seemed to work, the updating process started after powering on the player. (--> start reading here if not interested in the story <--) Now all I get when powering on or plugging in the USB cable is a short flash of the "iAudio starting" screen and lit buttons. The player isn't recognized as a mass storage device anymore (in Linux as well as in Windows 2000). The harddisk doesn't seem to start anymore (no clicking sounds). The reset button instantly shuts off the player, pushing the power slider shuts it off after a few seconds (when pushed longer than about 1 second). It seems to me as if either the installed firmware isn't working or that the hardware is defective (less likely). Is there any possibility to recover the player without special tools (in case the firmware is damaged) or will I have to send it in? Did I do anything wrong or was this just a case of bad luck? The player looked very nice while it was working. I'm sad I managed to break it on the first day. ![]() |

Re: iAudio 6 dead after firmware update
I have the same problem too. After going though all the procedures with the customer service rep they told me to submit a RMA request. At this addess: http://jetdb.jetaudio.com/RMARequest/Request.aspx
This happen to me after I upgraded the firmware to version 1.23 and then set my player to Music Browser Mode. When I restarted the player then it stalled while in the boot up process. When I reconnected my iAudio 6 to my linux box it did not automatically mount the player like it used too. I issued the dmesg command to see the system logs and this is what it displayed: usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb-storage: device found at 5 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Vendor: COWON Model: iAUDIO 6 Rev: 0100 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00 SCSI device sda: 7855648 512-byte hdwr sectors (4022 MB) sda: Write Protect is off sda: Mode Sense: 37 00 00 08 sda: assuming drive cache: write through SCSI device sda: 7855648 512-byte hdwr sectors (4022 MB) sda: Write Protect is off sda: Mode Sense: 37 00 00 08 sda: assuming drive cache: write through sda:<6>usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 sd 3:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x50000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 0 printk: 2 messages suppressed. Re: iAudio 6 dead after firmware update
I'd already upgraded the firmware (twice, maybe) with no problem, and done a couple of full resets too when there was buggy software after I first got it. This is really bad news for me. How difficult would it be to try the fix you mentioned? I can solder pretty well, and am willing to try just about anything - given current uselessness of small oblong object that doesn't do anything at all. I even have a nice Noreve case for it - but it's no good to me as just an ornament
